Elections are to be held on June 10 for 57 Rajya Sabha seats in 15 states of the country. The future of big faces like P. Chidambaram, Jairam Ramesh, Ajay Maken, Vivek Tankha and Randeep Surjewala of Congress including Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Piyush Goyal are also at stake.
New Delhi: Elections are to be held on June 10 for 57 Rajya Sabha seats in 15 states of the country, for which various political parties have started announcing their candidates.
According to the Election Commission, the last date for filing nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections is May 31. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on June 1 and names can be withdrawn till June 3. Voting will be held on June 10 from 9 am to 4 pm. Counting of votes will also take place on the same day. The last date for filing nominations is May 31.
In this episode, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday announced the names of its 18 candidates, in which Union Ministers Piyush Goyal and Nirmala Sitharaman have been nominated from Maharashtra and Karnataka respectively.
At the same time, BJP’s ally JDU has made Khiru Mahto its Rajya Sabha candidate from Bihar, giving a setback to Union Minister RCP Singh.
Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi’s name is also missing from the list of party candidates. However, the BJP has to announce the names of at least two candidates and both these seats are from Uttar Pradesh.
The BJP has also not fielded Dushyant Gautam, Vinay Sahastrabuddhe and OP Mathur.
Of the 18 candidates whose names were announced by the BJP for the Rajya Sabha, six are from Uttar Pradesh.
Former BJP MLA Radha Mohan Das Agarwal, who left Gorakhpur urban seat in the state for Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is among the party’s candidates for the Rajya Sabha.
Agarwal has been elected MLA from Gorakhpur Sadar seat continuously since 2002, but in the recently held assembly elections, he left his seat for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The BJP has also fielded former state unit chief Laxmikant Bajpai, sitting Rajya Sabha member Surendra Singh Nagar and Uttar Pradesh Backward Classes Finance and Development Corporation chairman Baburam Nishad from the state.
The party has also fielded two women from the state, Darshana Singh and Sangeeta Yadav. Darshana is the former chief of the party’s women’s wing while Sangeeta is a former MLA of the party from Chauri Chaura in Gorakhpur.
With a total of 273 MLAs in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) can easily win the Rajya Sabha election with eight of its candidates. At the same time, the SP alliance with a total of 125 MLAs has the numbers to win its three candidates.
A total of 31 members are elected to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh, out of which 11 members are being elected. Voting for this will be held on 10th June. Out of the 11 seats for which elections are being held, the term of five of the BJP, three of the SP, two of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and one member of the Congress is ending in July.
The party announced the names of two candidates each from Karnataka, Maharashtra and Bihar and one each from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Haryana.
The party has fielded former MLA from Haryana, Krishan Lal Panwar.
The names of Kavita Patidar from Madhya Pradesh, Ghanshyam Tiwari from Rajasthan and Kalpana Saini from Uttarakhand have been announced.
The party has fielded Satish Chandra Dubey and Shambhu Sharan Patel from Bihar.
According to a BJP release, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Goyal, Anil Sukhdevrao Bonde and Dhananjay Mahadik have been fielded from Maharashtra.
According to the numbers, BJP will easily win two seats, while there is a possibility of a contest for the third seat.
The BJP has fielded Aditya Sahu as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha from Jharkhand, from where Naqvi was a member in the past.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and actor-turned-politician Jaggesh have been made the party’s candidates from Karnataka.
Congress also declared 10 candidates including Chidambaram, Ramesh, Maken, Surjewala
The Congress on Sunday also announced 10 candidates, including Union ministers P Chidambaram, Jairam Ramesh and Ajay Maken as well as party’s chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala.
Chidambaram has been fielded from Tamil Nadu, Ramesh from Karnataka, Maken from Haryana and Surjewala from Rajasthan.
The party has fielded Mukul Wasnik and Pramod Tiwari from Rajasthan, Vivek Tankha from Madhya Pradesh, Rajiv Shukla and Ranjit Ranjan from Chhattisgarh and Imran Pratapgarhi from Maharashtra.
Seven Congress members that are falling vacant in the Rajya Sabha over the next two months are Chidambaram (Maharashtra), Ramesh (Karnataka), Ambika Soni (Punjab), Vivek Tankha (Madhya Pradesh), Pradeep Tamta (Uttarakhand), Kapil Sibal (Uttar Pradesh) and Chhaya Verma (Chhattisgarh) will complete his term.
Rajasthan: Congress-BJP announce candidates for four Rajya Sabha seats
Congress and BJP have declared candidates for the elections to be held on June 10 for four Rajya Sabha seats in the state.
Congress has declared Randeep Singh Surjewala, Mukul Wasnik and Pramod Tiwari as candidates from Rajasthan. All three leaders are not from Rajasthan.
At the same time, BJP has made Ghanshyam Tiwari, a six-time BJP MLA from Rajasthan, as the party’s candidate.
The nomination process for the Rajya Sabha elections in Rajasthan has started from May 24. May 31 is the last date for nominations.
It is noteworthy that the tenure of the four Rajya Sabha members of BJP Om Mathur, KJ Alphons, Ramkumar Verma and Harshvardhan Singh is ending on July 4.
Congress State President Govind Singh Dotasra has congratulated and congratulated the three candidates declared in the Rajya Sabha elections from Rajasthan, Surjewala, Wasnik and Tiwari.

Tiwari, a former education minister and a six-time MLA from the BJP, had resigned from the BJP in June 2018 due to differences with former chief minister Vasundhara Raje in 2017.
He openly criticized Raje, accusing him of corruption and complained against him to the party high command. He had alleged that he was not listened to in the party.
He resigned from the party due to growing differences with the party’s state and central leadership. He was vocal against former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and was given a notice of indiscipline.
Tiwari had contested the assembly elections in December 2018 from Sanganer assembly constituency of Jaipur by forming ‘Bharat Vahini Party’, but his deposit was forfeited.
He had joined the Congress party on 26 March 2019 in the presence of the then Congress President Rahul Gandhi. But in 2020, after talks with the central leadership, Tiwari again joined the BJP.
It is noteworthy that at present, Congress has 108 MLAs, BJP 71, independent 13, Rashtriya Loktantrik Party three, CPI(M) and Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) two each in the 200-seat Rajasthan Assembly. There are total 10 Rajya Sabha seats from the state.
Odisha: Naveen Patnaik announces four BJD candidates
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday announced four Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.
The BJD has announced the names of three new candidates – Sultan Dev, Manas Ranjan Mangraj and Niranjan Bishi.
Apart from this, Sasmit Patra has been nominated again. The announcement was made on the third anniversary of the fifth term of the Naveen Patnaik-led government in the state.
BJD president Patnaik has chosen Niranjan Bishi, the party’s tribal face in the western region of the state, while Mangraj is from the coastal region and Patra is the former president of the Odisha Minorities Forum.
Three members of Rajya Sabha from Odisha- N. The tenure of Bhaskar Rao, Prasanna Acharya and Sasmit Patra will end on July 1 while another seat has fallen vacant due to resignation of BJD member Subhash Singh.
Sultan Dev is the only woman among the four BJD candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections.
After becoming the mayor of Cuttack Municipal Corporation in March this year, Subhash Singh had resigned from the membership of Rajya Sabha. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in April 2020.
The ruling BJD has not announced who among the four candidates will contest the by-polls for the Rajya Sabha seat vacated by Subhash Singh.
The BJD has 113 MLAs in the 147-member Odisha Assembly, so it is likely to win all the four seats. The opposition BJP has 22 MLAs while the Congress has nine.
The nomination of Niranjan Bishi has angered a section of the party’s tribal community leaders in the western region. Bishi said, ‘I am grateful to the Chief Minister for believing in me and will take up the issues of tribals in Parliament.’
Commenting on the party’s announcement, Mangraj said that he has been in politics since 2002 and is looking after the media affairs of the BJD government in the state.
Mangraj said, ‘As a media person, I will raise various issues in the interest of the state in Parliament. I thank the Chief Minister for giving me an opportunity to serve the people of Odisha.
BJD’s woman candidate Sulata Dev said she was happy after her name appeared in the list of BJD candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections.
“The BJD government has always worked for the development of women. I will work hard and thank our organization secretary Pranab Prakash Das for this.
Sasmit Patra said that he is indebted to the Chief Minister for being re-nominated to the Upper House of Parliament.
Uttar Pradesh: Jayant Chaudhary files nomination for Rajya Sabha elections
At the same time, on Monday, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Chaudhary filed nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections as a joint candidate of Samajwadi Party (SP) and RLD.
Chaudhary, who reached the election office with SP President Akhilesh Yadav, filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections.
Talking to reporters before the nomination, Chaudhary said that the SP president has given him a huge honor for which he thanks him. He said, ‘I will try my best that whatever development issues are there, we actively raise them in the Rajya Sabha. Wherever there is atrocities, that issue will be raised. Apart from this, we will also raise the common issues which we have. Chowdhary said that his alliance with SP is strong and will continue to be strong.
RLD is an ally of the Samajwadi Party and had fought the last assembly elections in alliance with the SP. The SP and its allies and the RLD and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SubhSP) alliance have a total of 125 MLAs in the state assembly and they can easily win three candidates in the Rajya Sabha elections.
SP candidate Javed Ali and party-backed independent candidate Kapil Sibal have already filed nominations for the Rajya Sabha.
