Both the brothers were from Haryana and at the time of partition they lived in Gomla village of Mahendergarh district with their late father’s friend Karim Bakhsh.

The Muslim name of Gurdev Singh was Ghulam Muhammad.
Baksh went to Pakistan with elder brother Gurdev Singh while younger brother Daya Singh stayed with his maternal uncle in Haryana. After going to Pakistan, Baksh settled in Jhang district, about 200 km from Lahore in Punjab province, and changed the Muslim name of Gurdev Singh to Ghulam Muhammad. Gurdev Singh passed away a few years ago.

Gurdev’s son Muhammad Sharif told the media that over the years his father had written several letters to the Government of India requesting them to trace the whereabouts of his brother Daya Singh. He said that six months ago we were able to find Chacha Daya Singh through social media.
