Why is this Heliopolis Memorial special?
If we talk about the significance of the Heliopolis (Port Tevfik) Memorial, then Indian soldiers have an important relationship with this memorial. The Heliopolis Memorial is part of the Heliopolis Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery. This memorial has been built in memory of the sacrifice of 3727 Indian soldiers, who were martyred in different campaigns in Egypt and Palestine during the First World War.
Earlier this memorial was destroyed by the Egyptian army during the 1967 war between Israel and Egypt. Earlier there was not even the name of the Indian Army in it. Later, the names of Indian soldiers were added to the new memorial that was built. Last year Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar visited this memorial and paid tribute to Indian soldiers. During the First World War, Indian soldiers played an important role inside West Asia.
