Members of the Indian community living in Perth, including elders associated with the Indian Defense Forces and the Sikh History Association, came here to pay their respects to Private Sailen, who fought in action on the Western Front in 1917. He was killed in the fall, and today people have come to honor the new identity of the street named after him.
Private Tourist arrived in Australia from India in 1895 at the age of 22 and initially lived in the town of Geraldton, about 400 kilometers north of Perth, where he worked as a laborer. During the First World War, in February 1916, Private Sailen joined C Company of the 44th Infantry Battalion of the Australian Imperial Force at Claremont in Perth.

Sailani was one of 12 Indian-Australians known to have joined the Australian Imperial Force during the First World War. Private Sailani and Private Saran Singh were the only Indian soldiers who served for the Australian Imperial Force and died at the risk of their lives. It is said that more than 15 thousand Indian people fought with the allied army in Gallipoli. Historians believe that around 1,400 of them lost their lives on the peninsula.
After receiving basic combat training in Australia, Private Sailani served with his unit in France. But on June 1, 1917, one of the two Indo-Australian men killed during the war was an Indian. 22 people who were part of Sailani’s battalion attained martyrdom on this day. The private tourist was buried along with other Australian soldiers at the Strand Military Cemetery in Belgium. Private Sailani was awarded the British War Medal, Victory Medal and the 1914/15 Star for his exceptional service.
