Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, son of the late Benazir Ali Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, who was elected to the National Assembly for the first time in 2018, has been given a very important post of foreign minister in the government for the first time.
Islamabad: Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, son of former Pakistan Prime Minister late Benazir Ali Bhutto, was sworn in as the country’s foreign minister on Wednesday.
With this, the speculation about Bilawal’s role in the new government led by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif came to an end.
President Arif Alvi administered the oath of office and secrecy to 33-year-old Bilawal at a simple ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, former prime minister and Bilawal’s father Asif Ali Zardari and other officials and several leaders of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) were present there.
This is the first time that Bilawal has been given an important role in the government and a very important post like Foreign Minister. He reached the National Assembly for the first time by getting elected in 2018.
Bilawal has become the Foreign Minister at a time when Pakistan needs to move forward by balancing foreign policy while going through a very delicate situation.
The main challenges Bilawal will have to deal with as foreign minister include repairing strained ties with the US in the backdrop of allegations made by former prime minister Imran Khan and finding a way to restart the peace process with neighboring India.
It is worth noting that Bilawal had met Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif in London last week and discussed the political situation in Pakistan. During this, both the leaders had resolved to work together on issues related to politics and national interest.
A week after this meeting, Bilawal was sworn in as Foreign Minister on Wednesday.
The PPP is the second largest party in the current coalition government of Pakistan formed on April 11 under the leadership of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. Shahbaz Sharif is the president of PML-N.
