It has been more than a month since the ongoing violence between Israel and Hamas. Gaza has been completely destroyed and devastated by Israel’s attack. Meanwhile, an important resolution was passed in the United Nations, which was against the establishment of Israeli settlements in Palestine. India voted in favor of this resolution in the UN and has taken a stand against Israel.
India took the side of Palestine for the first time
A resolution was brought in the UN on 9 November regarding the settlements being built by Israel in the Palestinian territories including East Jerusalem and the occupied Syrian Golan area. 145 countries of the world, including India, unanimously opposed Israel’s move by voting in favor of the UN resolution, while seven countries stood with Israel. Israel, the Marshall Islands, Canada, Hungary, the Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru and the United States voted in favor of the resolution. Whereas 18 countries remained absent from voting.

The resolution brought to the United Nations included ‘Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem and the occupied Syrian Golan. It was passed with an overwhelming majority. For the first time, India has voted in favor of Palestine instead of Israel. Opposition party leaders are also praising this changed stand of India.
TMC MP praised
While sharing the picture of voting on the resolution in the United Nations on Twitter, TMC MP Saket Gokhale appreciated this step of India. He wrote on X that he is very happy that India voted in favor of the resolution. Israel’s occupation of Palestine through settlers is illegal. Saket Gokhale said that Israel’s apartheid should end now.

Let us tell you that last month, India had abstained from voting on a resolution presented by Jordan in the United Nations General Assembly (UNSC). This resolution was brought to the UN calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. India had abstained from voting because there was no mention of Hamas in this resolution.
The resolution regarding protection of citizens, maintaining legal and humanitarian obligations was passed with an overwhelming majority. 120 countries voted in favor of the resolution brought by Jordan in the UN, while 14 countries voted against it. At the same time, 45 countries had kept themselves away from voting i.e. did not take part in voting. India had abstained from voting.
India had strongly condemned the attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7. India’s stand against terrorism has always been clear. India stood with Israel after the Hamas attack, but is not in favor of the settlements being established by Israel in the Syrian Golan in the Palestine region. This is the reason why India voted against Israel in the UN.
