5G service: Union Minister of State for Communications Devsingh Chauhan informed that 5G service has been launched in 329 cities of the country. He said that indigenous stack technology can be exported to other countries in future.

5G In India: The Lok Sabha was told on Wednesday that all licensed service areas (lsa) 5G services have been started in 329 cities. Minister of State for Communications Devsingh Chauhan in the Lok Sabha (Loksabha) gave this information in a written reply. He said that Indian 4G/5G indigenous stack solutions are being tested on platforms like health, agriculture, smart manufacturing, education, gaming and drones.
Center for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) and Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) have developed an indigenous 4G/5G technology stack. Proof of concept of C-DOT’s 4G technology stack has been successfully done in BSNL network.

Export to other countries
The Minister of State said, “RJIL’s stack is being introduced extensively to roll out its 5G network, these indigenous technology stacks can be exported to other countries in future.”
Meanwhile, in response to another question, Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that BSNL’s 5G services will be provided after the 4G service is launched across India. BSNL had floated a tender for 1 lakh 4G sites on October 2022.
This bid was opened on November 23, 2022. “The valuation of the bid has been completed and is being presented for approval of the Group of Ministers (GoM). Vaishnav said, “Within 18-24 months of placing the purchase order, 4G services will be launched across India including Maharashtra and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.”
Merger of BSNL and MTNL
Responding to a question on the merger of BSNL and MTNL, Minister of State Chouhan said that the cabinet has approved the revival package of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on July 27, 2022. The cabinet had approved the constitution of a Committee of Secretaries (CoS) for a detailed inquiry to resolve the issues of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), including the merger of MTNL with BSNL.
Will crack down on OTT
On the question of OTT service, Chouhan said that the draft of the Indian Telecommunication Bill, 2022, released for public consultation in September, considers ‘OTT communication service’ as a type of telecom service.
Chouhan said, “The objective of this policy is that all forms of telecommunication, including OTT communication services, need to be brought under the purview of the law. The telecommunication draft will undergo further revision based on the comments/suggestions received during the public consultation.”
