Ahmedabad: Team India’s young opener Shubman Gill proved all those right who were talking about giving him a chance in the Test series against Australia instead of KL Rahul. On the third day of the Ahmedabad Test, the 23-year-old opener scored an excellent century and strengthened Team India. Gill, who scored his sixth international century in the last four months, however, regretted that he had to lose his wicket while trying to play a defensive shot, while playing an aggressive shot had no regrets.
Shubman Gill scored the highest 128 runs in India’s first innings on Saturday 11 March at the Narendra Modi Stadium. This is the second century of his Test career and the first against Australia. Due to this century of Gill, after the third day’s play, India scored 289 runs for three wickets in their first innings in response to Australia’s 480 runs. During this, Gill also made century partnerships with Cheteshwar Pujara and half-century partnerships with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Gill was putting pressure on himself
Gill, who has scored seven centuries in his international career within the last 6-7 months, also recalled his bad phase after the end of the day’s play and told how he was putting pressure on himself. He said, I have seen a phase in the middle when I was getting out after scoring around 40 and 50 (52 and 44 against New Zealand in 2021). When I played the fifth Test in England, I scored around 20 (17) and got out early in that innings. I felt that after spending time at the crease, I was getting defensive and over-cautious. I was starting to think that now I have to bat for as long as possible. I was putting myself under too much pressure.
Gill was upset with his game
Gill further said, it was not my natural game. Once I’m settled at the crease, I kind of get into a rhythm and that’s my game. So I had to tell myself that if I get out playing my natural game, it is okay. But the problem was that I was getting out with defensive batting. In such a situation, I had to convince myself that without putting too much pressure on myself, I have to convert my start into a big innings with my natural game. It is about the mental aspect.

Now Rohit is surprised
When the Indian innings started on the second day, in the last over of the day, Gill hit an excellent six off Nathan Lyon. When asked about this, he said, Rohit Sharma also expressed some surprise on this shot of mine. But I said it was my shot. If the off-spinner is bowling on a good wicket and the fielder is not far away, I will try to hit over him.
Ahmedabad pitch is not easy
At the same time, Gill also made it clear that the Ahmedabad pitch is not as flat as it seems for batting. He said, I think it is difficult to score fast runs on this kind of pitch, but it is also necessary that you stay positive and keep looking for opportunities to run and steal runs.
Shubman Gill has been in excellent form since last year and especially since December, his bat has been spewing runs. He has played six century innings since December. This includes two centuries in Tests, one in T20 International and three centuries in ODIs. He also scored a double century in ODIs during this period.
