Asia Cup 2023 is going to start from 30th August. But even before its start, the Bangladesh Cricket Team has suffered a major setback. Because the team captain Tamim Iqbal is struggling with his back injury and in such a situation he has resigned from his captaincy. At the same time, after him, the team is looking for its new captain. However, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has indicated handing over the command to star all-rounder Shakib-Al-Hasan.
Let us tell you that Bangladesh Cricket Board Chief Nazmul Hasan had already said that Liton Das will captain in ODIs if Tamim is not there. But now Tamim has resigned from his post. However, in a big tournament like the Asia Cup, the team needs a very experienced captain and in such a situation, Shabik Al Hasan is the biggest contender.
Najmul Hasan told reporters in Dhaka on Saturday 5 August that “we haven’t discussed the captaincy yet. We have to take a break and think about it. As I have said earlier, if it was a series, we could have gone with Liton as the vice-captain, but now we have to think long term.”
He said that “there are two problems. If we think about the long term, it’s one thing. But there is also the World Cup and the pressure of the World Cup is also not small. If I select a new man and whether he can handle the pressure – we need to consider that as well. If we select someone on long term basis and he is not available after one year, what will we do? So we need to discuss these things.”
Nazmul further said that “Shakib is the obvious choice but can you say he will play for two years? We don’t know that and that’s why we need to know their plan and talk to the board. I think the easiest option is Shakib and he has no problem. Leading in a bilateral series and World Cup are two different things. And whether it affects his (Liton) batting or not, we need to see everything. We will take a decision without any haste.”
