The promotion of Rohit Sharma as India’s new Test captain will be announced just after the ongoing tour of South Africa. The home Test series against Sri Lanka will be Rohit’s first official assignment as India’s new Test captain.
The board is also planning to groom KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant as future leaders. According to BCCI sources, the debate is not on who will be the next captain – but on who will be made the ‘vice-captain’ of the team.
“The vice-captain will be the future leader of India. KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah are all future leaders. The selectors need to groom them in a properly structured manner. More than the captaincy issue, the big decision for everyone in the selection committee is on India’s middle order issues.
Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli have been fighting for runs for some time now. The selectors need to make some big calls ahead of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka.
Pujara, Rahane, Kohli from January 2020
- Cheteshwar Pujara: T 20 / Runs 973 / Av 26.3 / 50’s – 6 / 100’s – 0
- Ajinkya Rahane: T 19 / Runs 819 / Av 24.09 / 50’s – 3 / 100 – 1
- Virat Kohli: T 15 / Runs 760 / Av 28.15 / 50’s – 6 / 100 – 0
It is certain that the selectors will go ahead with Pujara and Rahane and include Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari and Shubman Gill in the line-up.
There is no question of Virat Kohli’s place in the team or XI at this stage. BCCI President Sourav Ganguly himself has declared that Kohli as a batsman is still very important to the Indian cricket team.
BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said that, “He will continue to be a very important member of this team and will take this team to new heights with his contribution with the bat under a new captain.”
