Ajinkya Rahane has not been able to do anything special so far in the tour of India and West Indies (IND vs WI). He failed to prove himself even in the first innings of the second Test (IND vs WI 2nd Test). In such a situation, former Indian batsman Wasim Jaffer believes that Indian team vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane will have to score runs to remain in the Test team. Rahane needs to bring consistency in his game. The 35-year-old Rahano has again started going out of form after showing amazing performances in the IPL and the World Test Championship (WTC). In such a situation, questions are again being raised on their continuity.
Wasim Jaffer speaking on Geo Cinema on Friday said that “Rahane has to bring consistency in his game, which has been his problem in the past. Even if he has played 80-90 Tests. But consistency has been an issue with him. They have to overcome it. Because after the departure of Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane has a good captaincy option for India.
Jafar says that “Rahane has to score runs and everything else will happen after that. The Indian selectors see a strong captaincy option in Rahane. Had he been in good form in the Australia series after being all out for 36, the way he led the team and scored a century in Melbourne, he would have been the next Test captain. But Rahane lost his form and was dropped from the team.
Jafar said that “Rahane has proved his worth again in the IPL and he got his chance in the World Test Championship. He was also made the vice-captain because the Indian selectors saw a good leader in him. He still has age and time. But Rahane needs to score runs. If he doesn’t maintain consistency then it will be difficult for him.”
Significantly, Ajinkya Rahane has not scored any special runs in the India vs West Indies series so far. He was dismissed for just eight runs in the first innings of the second Test match as well. At the same time, his performance in the first match was disappointing.
