The Indian cricket team has reached the final of the ODI World Cup for the fourth time where it will face five-time champion Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday. Team India had earlier won the World Cup in 2011 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni and lifted the World Cup trophy for the second time. Team India won the title for the second time that year by defeating Sri Lanka in the final at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, but after this a controversy had arisen regarding the ICC World Cup trophy. This controversy became very deep and ICC had to give clarification regarding this.
This controversy was regarding the World Cup trophy given to then Team India captain Dhoni after winning the title. It was told in many media reports that the trophy given to Dhoni is not the original trophy but a fake trophy. There was an uproar after this news came out.
ICC had to give clarification
It was told in media reports that the original trophy is with the Customs Department of Mumbai and that trophy was not given due to the problem regarding payment. When this news came in the media, many former cricketers including fans were very angry. Fans also carried an effigy of ICC Chairman Sharad Pawar at that time. But then ICC had issued a statement regarding this and presented its clarification. ICC had termed the media reports as wrong and had said that the trophy given to Team India captain Dhoni for winning the World Cup is the original trophy of the tournament. ICC had told that the trophy given is the same which was made for Cricket World Cup-2011 and it also has the logo of the event on it.
Regarding the trophy which was in the Customs Department, the ICC had said that the trophy which is with the Customs Department of Mumbai is the trophy which is kept in the ICC headquarters and is used only for promotional events. ICC had said that this trophy has the corporate logo of ICC and not the logo of the 2011 tournament. ICC had said that this trophy will be taken back to Dubai ICC headquarters by ICC staff. That is, ICC had made it clear in its statement that a new trophy is made for every World Cup and the original trophy remains at the ICC headquarters only.
what happens to the trophy
According to the report of Sportstar dated May 24, 2019, a replica trophy is given to the team that wins the World Cup, while the original trophy is kept at the ICC headquarters in Dubai. However, there is a very subtle difference between the two. According to the report, the logo of the year in which the tournament is held is made on the replica trophy and it is made for that tournament. In 1999, when Australia won the World Cup under the captaincy of Steve Waugh, they lifted the original trophy, but the team took only the replica with them and the original trophy went to Dubai. The original trophy, which was lifted by Steve Waugh in 1999, is used for trophy tours and other promotional events. Every time a replica trophy is made for the World Cup, which has the logo of that year’s event on it.
