India had defeated Sri Lanka by a huge margin of 302 runs.
The performance of some teams in the World Cup 2023 has been worse than expected. Apart from England and Pakistan, Sri Lanka is also included in this, which had started well but after that, its hopes of reaching the semi-finals were shattered due to defeat in 3 consecutive matches. Especially the crushing defeat by 302 runs against India raised questions on this team. The Sri Lankan board has been in action since then and a report has also been sought from the team management. The situation has become such that the Secretary of Cricket Sri Lanka has also resigned.
There was a clash between India and Sri Lanka on Thursday 2 November at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In this match, Team India first scored 357 runs and then defeated Sri Lanka for just 55 runs and won by a huge margin of 302 runs. This was Sri Lanka’s 5th defeat in 7 matches, out of which it was the 3rd consecutive defeat. The most troubling thing for Sri Lanka was that for the third time this year the team was bundled out for less than 100 runs against India.
Board officer’s resignation after investigation
Due to such performance of his team, the Sports Minister of Sri Lanka asked Sri Lanka Cricket to take action. In a statement, he blamed the board’s selection committee and officials. After the sharp statement of the Sports Minister, Board President Shammi Silva has ordered the team management present in the World Cup to submit a report on this performance. Amidst all this, Board Secretary Mohan D’Silva has resigned from his post due to the poor performance of the team. De Silva’s resignation is sure to put pressure on other board officials to also leave their posts.
Will it be amazing in the last 2 matches?
The performance of the Sri Lankan team in this World Cup has not been as per expectations. However, the team has had to deal with injuries to many of its key players before and during the tournament. Even team captain Dasun Shanka was out after the initial matches due to injury. The Lankan team was not only defeated by stronger teams, but it also had to face a crushing defeat from Afghanistan. Now he has to play 2 more matches in the World Cup, in which he will be against Bangladesh and New Zealand. If the team wins these two matches then the team and the board will heave a sigh of relief.
