Sachithra Senanayake Match Fixing: Former Sri Lankan cricketer Sachitra Senanayake has been arrested on charges of match fixing. According to reports, Senanayake was arrested today after surrendering before the Special Investigation Unit of the Sports Ministry and will be produced in court. Sachitra Senanayake is accused of trying to fix matches during the Lanka Premier League (LPL) in 2020.
It is alleged that Senanayake had contacted two cricketers via telephone from Dubai to fix matches in the first edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) in 2020. In August 2023, the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court imposed a travel ban on the former cricketer after an investigation into match-fixing allegations was initiated.
A three-month travel ban was imposed on the former off-spinner after the Attorney General (AG) directed the Sports Ministry’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) to file criminal charges against him.
However, the former cricketer has denied all the allegations and claimed that these are baseless allegations aimed at defaming him and his family. Sachitra Senanayake (38) has played one Test, 49 ODIs and 24 T20 Internationals for Sri Lanka between 2012 and 2016.
