Elavenil Valarivan wins gold in ISSF Shooting World Cup
ISSF Shooting World Cup 2023: Olympian Elavenil Valarivan won her second gold medal in the women’s 10m air rifle event of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Rifle/Pistol competition here. Elavenil performed brilliantly, never scoring less than 10.1 in the 24-shot final among the eight women.
Elavenil scored 252.2 points to beat France’s 20-year-old sensation Ossien Muller, who stood second with 251.9 points. China’s Zheng Jiale finished third and won the bronze medal. Elavenil had made it to the finals by finishing eighth with 630.5 points.
Mueller had topped the qualification with 633.7 points. Apart from China’s two shooters Zheng Jiali and Zheng Yu, Norway’s European champion Janet Hague Duestedt also made it to the finals. In the men’s 10 meter air rifle event, India’s Sandeep Singh finished 14th in the qualification with 628.2 points.
On Friday, Elavenil along with Sandeep had scored a combined score of 629.91 in the 10 meter air rifle mixed team event. The fourth and last place in the medal round of this event went to Israel, who scored 0.5 points more than India in the 42-team competition.
Elavenil scored 314.8 while Sandeep scored 314.3. The Indian pair missed out on competing for the bronze medal by a narrow margin. Israel ultimately won the bronze medal. Germany won the gold medal while Hungary won the silver medal. India’s 16-member team is competing in seven Olympic events at the Rio World Cup. Italy is leading with two golds while India and Armenia are joint third. (PTI)
