40 years ago on this day i.e. 25 June 1983, India won its first Cricket World Cup title against West Indies (IND vs WI) at Lord’s Cricket Ground in England. During that time the captain of Team India was Kapil Dev. Let us tell you that in this match West Indies decided to bowl first after winning the toss and asked India to bat first.
Significantly, in this match, after losing the toss, the opening pair i.e. Sunil Gavaskar and Krishnamachari Srikkanth got the team off to a good start. But after that both the batsmen were dismissed early, leaving India at 59 for 2. Indian captain Kapil Dev scored an important 15 runs in this match. It was Mohinder Amarnath who played a crucial role with both bat and ball, contributing 26 runs and taking 3 wickets to help India seal a historic victory.
In response, the West Indies got off to a good start chasing the target from India and openers Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes shared a solid partnership. However, once Mohinder Amarnath broke the partnership by dismissing Haynes, the Indian bowlers picked up wickets. Amarnath, who bowled brilliantly throughout the innings, took 3 wickets for just 12 runs. The Indian bowlers, led by Madan Lal and Amarnath, kept the pressure on the West Indies batsmen by taking regular wickets and won the match in the end.
