According to the police, it is alleged that YouTuber Tuhin Mandal created alleged inflammatory and derogatory memes by editing parts of her speeches with the intention of tarnishing the image of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The complainant has claimed that such acts can lead to incitement to violence.
Kolkata/Kalyani: A 29-year-old ‘YouTuber’ was arrested from Nadia district on Tuesday for allegedly making objectionable ‘memes’ on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Police gave this information.
He told that ‘YouTuber’ Tuhin Mandal was arrested by the Intelligence Branch officials of Kolkata Police from his house in Bapujinagar under Taherpur police station area.
A week ago, a 21-year-old man lodged a complaint against YouTuber at Taratala police station in south Kolkata.
A Kolkata Police official said, “It appears that the accused created alleged provocative, derogatory memes by editing parts of his speeches to malign the image of the Chief Minister.” The complainant claimed that such acts may lead to incitement to violence, which may lead to breach of peace in the state.
He said that the complainant has also named at least seven other ‘content creators’ who are being traced.
He said that a case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Similarly, in June, Kolkata Police arrested YouTuber Roddur Roy for abusing the Chief Minister in a Facebook Live session, according to news agency PTI.
In April 2012, Kolkata Police arrested Jadavpur University professor Ambikesh Mohapatra for allegedly sending an email containing a cartoon of Banerjee.
In the year 2019, BJP worker Priyanka Sharma was arrested for sharing a meme of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on social media.
