New Delhi: The Chief Election Commissioner of India, Rajiv Kumar announced the schedule of Presidential election by holding a press conference. He said that the voting for the Presidential election will be held on 18th July, while the counting of votes will be done on 21st July.
He said that voting will be done through e-ballot paper and nominated MPs and MLAs will not be able to vote. Along with this, the MPs of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha and all the MLAs will be voters in the Presidential elections.

In this election, 776 MPs and 4033 MLAs will take part in voting. With this, there will be a total of 4809 votes for the Presidential election. The Election Commission said
No political party can issue whip to its members.

The President is elected by the members of the electoral college, which consists of elected members of both the Houses of Parliament and elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of all the states, including the National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
Nominated members of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha or State Assemblies are not eligible to be included in the electoral college and hence, they are not entitled to take part in elections. Similarly, the members of the Legislative Councils are also not electors for the Presidential election.
According to Article 62 of the Constitution, the election of the next President must take place before the completion of the term of the current President. In 2017, the election for the President of India was held on 17 July and the result was declared on 20 July.

A President is elected by the members of an electoral college consisting of elected members of the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and elected members of the State Assemblies and the Union Territories of Delhi and Puducherry. Members of Legislative Councils and nominated members are not part of the electoral college. Among all, the electoral college has the highest value of votes in Uttar Pradesh.
In the recent scenario, the BJP-led NDA is clearly a strong one, thanks to the recent victories it registered in four of the five states (Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur). Although the coalition does not have a majority in the Rajya Sabha, the coalition’s presidential candidate will definitely get an edge.
