Imphal : Election officials have cleared the nomination papers of 175 candidates for 38 assembly constituencies going to polls in the first phase of Manipur elections on February 28. Friday is the last date for withdrawal of candidature. Elections to the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly are to be held on February 28 and March 5. At the same time, the counting of votes will take place on March 10.
Officials said there are 45 candidates, including Chief Minister N Biren Singh (Hingang seat), for 10 assembly constituencies in Imphal East district. Speaker Y Khemchand (Singjamei seat) and Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar (Uripok seat) are among the 56 candidates who filed nominations from 13 assembly constituencies in Imphal West district.
22 candidates have filed their nominations for six assembly seats in Bishnupur district. At the same time, 34 candidates are in the fray from six assembly seats in Churachandpur district and 18 from three assembly constituencies in Kangpokpi district.
Let us inform that the Election Commission had changed the dates of elections in Manipur on the previous day. In fact, the Election Commission took this decision on the appeal of the local residents. The dates were changed after Christian groups demanded that the elections be held on any day other than Sunday (February 27). Earlier, the first phase of voting was to be held on February 27 and the second phase of voting was to be held on March 3. Apart from this, the dates of voting have also changed in Punjab. Earlier, voting was to be held there on February 14, but later after the appeal of all the parties, it was decided to vote on February 20.
