Kolkata: The Chief Minister of West Bengal and the Trinamool Congress chief announced to fight the elections for the next year’s Lok Sabha elections with the support of the people alone, refusing any alliance.
Accusing the CPI(M) and the Congress of colluding with the BJP, he said, “How will the Congress fight the BJP if there is an unholy alliance?”, according to NDTV. How will the Left fight the BJP… Anti-BJP?
This statement of Mamta Banerjee has come after the victory of the Congress in the Sagardighi by-election, where the Congress has snatched the assembly seat from the ruling Trinamool.
Congress candidate Byron Biswas defeated his nearest Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate by 22,980 votes in the by-election to the Sagardighi assembly seat in West Bengal. Bypolls were held on this seat after the death of state minister Subrata Saha in December last year.
Regarding this, Banerjee said that the Congress, the Left and the BJP have all played the ‘communal card’ in Sagardighi. The difference is that the BJP has played it openly, but the CPI(M) and the Congress have played it to a greater extent.
He said, “This is a lesson that we should not listen to the CPI(M) or the Congress… We cannot have an alliance with those who work with the BJP.”
In a statement, Banerjee said, ‘In 2024 we will see an alliance between the Trinamool and the people. We will not go with any other political parties. We will fight alone with the support of the people.
The Bengal leader was one of the key negotiators of the opposition alliance in 2019 but not only did it fail, but the BJP made massive inroads in his state, winning 18 of the 42 parliamentary seats.
Since then Mamata Banerjee has been increasingly focusing on Bengal. His participation in any opposition show of strength has been almost non-existent.
He has got a third term in 2021 with a comprehensive victory in Bengal, but his many efforts outside the state have not brought positive results. Trinamool Congress failed to open account in Goa and now Tripura. However, the party won five seats in Meghalaya.
Banerjee is seen by many as a prime ministerial candidate for 2021 onwards – though she is joined by her Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Telangana’s K.K. Chandrasekhar Rao is also there.
But on Thursday, Banerjee only took aim at her anti-BJP credentials – and at local rivals the CPI(M) and the Congress.
He said, ‘Those who want to defeat the BJP, I am sure they will vote for us… Trinamool Congress is strong enough to fight these three forces together. We have done this in 2021 Bengal assembly elections, we will do it again. There is no need to worry.
