New Delhi: A global civil society coalition ‘CIVICUS’ in its new report ‘People Power Under Attack 2022’ has placed India’s position on civil liberties in the ‘Repressed’ category.
In the year 2018, India’s civil liberties were classified as ‘Obstructed’ category, but in 2019 it was reduced to ‘Repressed’ category and since then it is in the same category.
In the context of India, the report talks about the use of harsh laws like UAPA and FCRA against those people and NGOs who do not agree with the government.
The report states:
In India, repressive anti-terror laws such as the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) have been systematically used by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to detain student activists and social activists.
Like those activists whom the government has accused of inciting violence in Bhima Koregaon in 2018. Among those detained under the law is Kashmiri activist Khurram Parvez.
In addition, the government used the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (ACRA) to raid and harass important civil society organizations such as the Center for Promotion of Social Concern and Oxfam India, and blocked such organizations’ access to foreign funding. Gave.
There is a category worse than ‘repressed’, which is called ‘bandh’. Seven Asian countries have been classified in the ‘closed’ category in this year’s report, including China, Laos, North Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Hong Kong and Myanmar.
Eight countries have been placed in the ‘repressed’ category. This includes Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, India, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
It is known that many international civil society organizations have questioned India’s status of freedom and rights in recent years.
Recently, the USCIRF, funded by the US State Department, said that anti-conversion laws are being passed in various BJP-ruled states, which are against international human rights laws, to which India is also a party.
