New Delhi: Amid the suspense over the Aam Aadmi Party’s chief ministerial candidate, the Congress on Monday gave a clear indication of supporting Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi in the electoral state. Congress tweeted a video, in which actor Sonu Sood says, “The real Chief Minister is the one who doesn’t need to be told that he is the CM candidate”.
Several clips of Channi participating in various events followed Sonu Sood’s remark, “The real Chief Minister, the real Raja is the one who has to be forcibly brought to the chair and who doesn’t have to struggle for it and need not be told.” That I am the CM candidate, I deserve it.
Sood says in the video, “He should be such a backbencher, who is brought from behind and told that you deserve it. Such a Chief Minister can bring a change in the country.” Sonu Sood’s sister Malvika Sood has been declared the Congress candidate from Moga.
The video is being seen as an endorsement of Channi by the Congress as the chief ministerial candidate of Punjab, where polling will be held on February 20. Punjab Congress unit chief Navjot Singh Sidhu is nowhere to be seen in the 36-second long clip. Hours after the video was posted by the official Twitter handle of the Congress, Punjab Youth Congress also echoed the message.
Punjab Youth Congress tweeted along with a video of the Chief Minister attending various events and addressing rallies, “History tells us that powerful people come from powerful places. History was wrong. Powerful people make places powerful. “
Channi was appointed as the Chief Minister of Punjab after Captain Amarinder Singh resigned in September last year amid a tussle with Sidhu. Amarinder Singh has formed his own party to contest the assembly elections in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Sidhu had said last Thursday that he was “not running for any office” but took a dig at the “system” which “could not deliver justice in cases of sacrilege and drugs”.
He said in a tweet, “A system that could not do justice to our guru and punish the big fish involved in the drug trade needs to be demolished. I categorically state that I I am not running for any post and either this system will remain or Navjot Singh Sidhu.”
