New Delhi: The Congress has decided not to organize large public meetings and programs for the next 15 days in five election states, including Uttar Pradesh, in view of the continuous increase in the cases of corona virus infection in the country. Party sources have given this information on Wednesday.
Sources said that first of all, after talking to the leaders of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee, it was decided that big election meetings, programs and marathons would not be organized in the state.
Sources also say that KC Venugopal, the organization general secretary of the All India Congress Committee, has asked its units of the electoral states to review the situation in their respective states and then take a decision about the meetings and programs.
It is to be known that assembly elections are going to be held soon in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur.
When asked about this decision of the Congress, party spokesperson Gaurav Vallabh said that the BJP should also take a decision in the interest of the people by taking the lessons of the Congress.
He told reporters, ‘For us people’s health and lives are first. Electoral defeat and victory come later. We do not want a situation like a second wave of corona to arise in the country once again. For us the country and the countrymen are first. We will ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP to learn from the Congress and take decisions in the interest of the people.
The All India Congress Committee has asked its units in the election states to review the situation in their respective states and take a decision on stopping meetings and programs.
According to news agency PTI, the marathon race of girls to be held in Azamgarh, Varanasi, Ghaziabad and Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh has been cancelled.
Congress spokesperson Lallan Kumar said that on the instructions of General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, the party has canceled its big election rallies till the situation of COVID-19 improves.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s rally to be held in Noida on Thursday has also been cancelled, and no specific reason has been given for the same. However, sources close to him said that bad weather could be the reason.
Congress spokesperson Ashok Singh said that the party has decided to go to small meetings through street plays and door-to-door campaigns to reach the public ahead of the assembly elections.
Notably, Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Kumar Lallu and its legislature party leader Aradhana Mishra recently wrote to Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra, asking political parties to hold small meetings like chaupas, street plays and virtual meetings. should be encouraged to organize.
He had also emphasized that all political parties should distribute masks and ensure proper handling of Covid among the people participating in their election programmes.
To woo voters, Congress has announced that it will give 40 percent tickets to women candidates in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections.
The party has also made a manifesto ‘Shakti Vidhan’ for women and it includes various schemes for women empowerment.
The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday extended the night curfew by two hours and closed all schools up to class 10 till Makar Sankranti on January 14, in view of the continuous increase in the cases of corona virus.
