    Bhagwant Mann to be AAP’s chief ministerial candidate in Punjab Assembly elections

    Mann, 48, is a two-time Lok Sabha MP from Sangrur and the party’s state unit chief.

    Kejriwal announced the results of the ‘Janata Chungi Apna CM’ campaign through a ‘missed call’ in a public meeting. Party leaders said that the party had received 21.59 lakh responses under this campaign to choose the chief ministerial face for the assembly elections.

    Kejriwal told reporters, ‘In 21.59 lakh responses, the names of many people including my name came. I already said that I am not in the race. We are declaring those votes (in which Kejriwal’s name) are invalid. Of the remaining other votes, 93.3 percent people gave the name of Sardar Bhagwant Mann. At the same time, the name of Navjot Singh Sidhu, at number two (Congress’s Punjab unit chief) was given by 3.16 percent of the people.

    “Bhagwant Mann is formally declared as the chief ministerial face of AAP,” Kejriwal said.

    Mann got emotional after this announcement. Mann’s mother and sister were also present at the event.

    In a tweet, Kejriwal said, ‘I congratulate Sardar Bhagwant Mann on being declared the Chief Minister face of AAP in Punjab. Entire Punjab is looking at AAP as a hope. It is a huge responsibility and I am sure Bhagwant will bring a smile to every Punjabi’s face.

    In response, Bhagwant Mann said, ‘Sir, I will do my best to live up to the trust and confidence that you and the people of Punjab have reposed in me. Whatever step I will take, it will make you and 3 crore Punjabis very proud.

    Mann said he has a dual responsibility on his shoulders as he has been nominated not only by the party but also by the people of the state.

    AAP is the only party among the major contesting parties in Punjab which has announced its chief ministerial face. It is noteworthy that polling for the 117-member Punjab assembly is to be held on February 20 and the counting of votes will be done on March 10.

    Former comedian Bhagwant Mann’s political career began in 2012 with Manpreet Badal’s People’s Party of Punjab, but lost his first assembly election from Lehra, Indian Express reported.

    He joined AAP in 2014 and won the Sangrur parliamentary seat by a margin of over two lakh votes. In the 2017 assembly elections, AAP pitted him against Akali president Sukhbir Badal from Jalalabad, but he had to face defeat then. In 2019, he again won the Sangrur parliamentary seat by a margin of more than one lakh votes.

    Mann remained the convener of AAP Punjab, but resigned in 2018 after Arvind Kejriwal tendered an unconditional apology to Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia. He returned as the state party president in January 2019.

    The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has slammed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) over Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann’s nomination as its chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections, saying that with this announcement, the state’s main opposition party has made its mark. ‘Liquor policy’ was also announced.

    Chugh said that the people of Punjab will decide who to make the hero.

    He alleged, ‘The person against whom another colleague of his party had given a written request that it is difficult to sit with him, because his mouth smells of alcohol, what such people will do to Punjab, this public knows very well and their She will answer it with votes.
