Two people have been detained in connection with the incident that took place in the presence of local people on Saturday (January 1) night in Mamrani village of Dergaon police station area.
Officer-in-charge of Dergaon police station Pradeep Choudhary said no complaint was lodged in the first 12 hours of the attack. Chaudhary said, ‘The victim has been identified as Sanjay Das. His family members had come to the police station some time back. They have lodged a complaint, after which we have registered the case now.
According to the police, Das was attacked by three men, who are residents of the same village. After the attack, Das was first taken to Dergaon Civil Hospital, but the doctors there shifted him to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH). Das died in the early hours of Sunday.
The two accused, who have been taken into custody by the police, are being interrogated to get the details of the case.
“As per our information, the goat of one of the accused had gone missing and Das was suspected of stealing,” Chaudhary said. The goat owner along with his friends thrashed Das, leading to his death.
During the recently concluded winter session of the Assam Legislative Assembly, the government had said it would discuss bringing a bill against lynching cases like some other states.
Earlier, All Assam Student Union (AASU) leader Animesh Bhuiyan was lynched by a mob after a heated argument over an accident in Jorhat city on 29 November 2021.
Neeraj Das, the main accused in this case, died a few hours after his arrest.
Jorhat police says that Das tried to escape from police custody on the midnight of 30 November 2021, during which he died in an accident. According to the police, he was hit by a speeding police vehicle while fleeing from the police vehicle at around 1.30 pm.
