New Delhi: An investigation has been launched following the recovery of at least 11 skulls and 54 fetal bones from the premises of a private hospital in Maharashtra’s Wardha district. A doctor and a nurse of the hospital have been arrested.
An official said that this revelation came when the police was investigating a case of illegal abortion. Acting on a tip-off, the police on Wednesday searched a biogas plant located in the premises of Kadam Hospital in Arvi tehsil and found the skull and bones of the fetus, which have now been sent for laboratory examination.
The officer said the police are now investigating whether the recovered bones and skulls were disposed of legally or illegally. Based on a complaint, a hospital doctor Rekha Kadam and a nurse have been taken into custody for allegedly performing an illegal abortion of a 13-year-old girl, police said.
He said the parents of a minor boy have also been arrested, who allegedly impregnated the girl with whom he was in a relationship. The boy’s parents had threatened the victim’s parents that they would defame the girl if she did not get an abortion, and they paid for the entire procedure last week, the official said.
The officer said that a complaint of illegal abortion was registered, following which the accused were arrested under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. According to the police, the doctors failed to inform the authorities about the abortion of a girl below 18 years of age.
