Some local BJP leaders claimed that the person who was thrashed had abused the BJP state president while threatening to shoot.
According to the news agency PTI, in the meantime, after the matter came to light, Dhanbad police took quick action and arrested a BJP worker.
When asked in this regard, BJP spokesperson Kunal Shadangi said that he condemns such behavior and claimed that such acts cannot be done by BJP workers.
The party’s Dhanbad MLA Raj Sinha and Dhanbad MP PN Singh were also present in the protest organized by the BJP.
Singh said, “We are probing the matter and Dhanbad police is also probing it and has registered an FIR.” One person has been arrested. He said it was not immediately clear who Zeeshan had abused.
The FIR has been registered on the complaint of Zeeshan’s younger brother Rehan Khan. Rehan told The Indian Express that his brother was diagnosed with bipolar disorder (a mental illness) 10 years ago.
28-year-old Rehan said, ‘What kind of society is this? If my brother said anything, did he deserve to be treated like this – forced to lick his spit and say Jai Shri Ram. My brother is suffering from mental illness since 2012.
He said a doctor in Ranchi is treating Zeeshan, who has already been treated at the Central Institute of Psychiatry in the state capital.
In his complaint to the police, Rehan said, “My elder brother Zeeshan Khan was passing through the city center between 1-2 pm where BJP members were protesting in the Gandhi statue area. The mob chased and thrashed my brother. Forced to lick spit and asked to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’. My brother is injured. I request that legal action be taken and justice be done to my brother.
Confirming the FIR, Dhanbad SSP Sanjeev Kumar told The Indian Express, “We have arrested one person, Jitu Sha. Further investigation is on to arrest the rest.
He said the political affiliation of the arrested person would become clear after investigation. When asked about the provocation, he said, “It is a matter of investigation.”
According to India Today, on the basis of the viral video, the police raided the residences of two BJP workers and arrested four. Assistant Superintendent of Police Manoj Swargiari said that strict action would be taken against those found guilty.
Congress and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha condemned the incident and said that the state has already passed a bill to stop incidents of mob lynching, but such cases are still coming to the fore.
Meanwhile, BJP leader CP Singh said the party would investigate the matter and find out whether the attackers were actually BJP workers.
If it is found that they were party workers, action would be taken against them, he said. The BJP leader also said that no senior party leader had asked the workers to thrash the victim.
It is known that on 21 December 2021, the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly passed the Mob Violence and Mob Lynching Bill, 2021 to strictly deal with the cases of mob lynching.
