Jammu and Kashmir: Manipuri priest assaulted for conversion, forced to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’

New Delhi: A Christian priest from Manipur was thrashed by unidentified right-wing supporters in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district for not saying ‘Jai Shri Ram’ on Christmas. A video of the incident went viral on Thursday (December 30), after which there was outrage in the community.

According to the report, in the viral video it can be seen that two people are pressurizing the priest to say ‘Jai Shri Ram’. Along with this, he alleged that he was engaged in conversion, which has been rejected by both the police and the victim.

He said, ‘Where are you from? Who has brought you here?’

Priest Chunglenlal Singsit the wire Said, ‘The incident happened around 3 pm on Christmas. I had gone to pray at a person’s house in Kathua. I returned home and went to the market to buy some gifts for my three children. Then two people stopped me and started accusing me of converting the family where I had gone that day. He forced me to say ‘Jai Shri Ram’.

Chunglenlal, who belongs to the Kuki tribe and is a native of Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, said, “After sometime he called someone and another person joined him. By then a crowd of 100 people had gathered, some of whom threatened to beat me up for converting, while three people slapped me several times.

“They also called the local police and accused me of converting to religion in the area,” he said.

The pastor further said, ‘When I told the police what really happened and denied any kind of conversion, despite this the police picked me up, kept me in lockup for more than 24 hours, abused and abused me. I was also beaten up in custody. Kathua SSP said that if I do not leave for Manipur within five days, action will be taken against me.

Chunglenlal said that he has been living in Kathua for the last three years and works as a priest in a Christian organization called Friends of Missionary Prayer Band.

“I was released after 24 hours as members of my organization asked if I had been arrested and a copy of the FIR was sought to get my bail,” he said.

Kathua SSP’s personal assistant the wire Denied the arrest or detention of any Christian priest on charges of conversion. Stating that the senior officer was not in the office, he said, “We are not aware of any such case in Kathua.”
