Paarl: Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah on Monday said that if he gets a chance to become the captain in Tests, it will be an honor for him. He further said that whether he gets this honor or not, he will continue to do better for the team. Virat Kohli is no longer the captain and Rohit Sharma is unavailable due to injury. Therefore, in the ODI series against South Africa here, Bumrah will be the vice-captain in the ODI series from Wednesday.
Bumrah said in a virtual press conference on Monday, “I am ready to contribute in any situation and way for the team. If I am given a chance to become the captain in Tests, then definitely I will think about it. Me. I like to do my job, although I can contribute, but it doesn’t really matter whether I get this responsibility or not. So I will always do better for the team.”
Bumrah said, “If I am given a chance to become the captain again, it is an honor and there is no greater feeling than that. But I try to focus on the things that I can contribute.”
Talking about his role in the current leadership scenario, Bumrah said that it is no different, as I like to do my job.
He said, “I don’t change my role at all because I have to do my work first. I am trying to contribute as much as I can for the team in whatever area and KL Rahul’s full help in any situation.” I can.”
He added, “I also try to talk to some of the young players who have come now and had a lot of on-field discussions with them. That’s the role I have to do again and I am trying. Do that too. Anyone special. There is no responsibility or extra pressure that I want to take on. Helping the team and Rahul in any way possible and trying to keep myself calm.”
India’s vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah on Monday revealed that Virat Kohli had already informed the team about his decision to step down as captain in a meeting after the Cape Town Test in the ODI series against South Africa.
Bumrah said, we have been very close to him as a team. He told us in a meeting that he would step down from the Test captaincy. He informed us about it as a team. We respect his decision and attach great importance to his leadership.
His remarks came after Kohli announced on Saturday that he would step down from the Test captaincy with immediate effect. The upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa, starting in Paarl on Wednesday, will be his first white-ball series as a player.
He said, look, I am not here to take any decision about him. But yes, personally we respect his decision. He knows what mental state he is in. We respect that and I am very happy to play under him as I made my Test debut under him.
He further added, as I have said earlier also he brings a lot of energy to the team. He will always be a leader in the group and his contribution has been huge and is going to be huge going forward.
