Hyderabad-based vaccine maker Bharat Biotech on Thursday announced that its indigenously developed COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin is now a universal vaccine for adults and children. Bharat Biotech said, ‘Covaccine is now a universal vaccine for adults and children. Our goals of developing a global vaccine against COVID-19 have been achieved and all the work for licensing has also been completed.

Earlier, the Hyderabad-based vaccine manufacturer had claimed that its COVID Vaccine Covaccine can neutralize both Delta and Omicron variants of the corona virus. Studies have found that a booster dose of Covaccine has the ability to prevent infection with the Omicron and Delta variants. Bharat Biotech said that people who were given a booster dose of Covaccine six months after the initial two doses have been found to develop immunity against Omicron and Delta variants. Earlier studies have shown the ability of covaccine to inhibit alpha, beta, delta, zeta and kappa.

At the same time, Bharat Biotech has sought approval from the Drug Controller General of India for a regular market for ‘Covaccine’, which is currently authorized for emergency use only in the country. According to the source, the firm is yet to submit the complete data of clinical trials of Covaccine to DCGI.
