Agniveer Gawte Akshay Laxman died due to altitude related medical condition while on duty in Siachen. Officials said Gavate Akshay Laxman is the first Agniveer who was recruited under the Agneepath model and died while on duty. The Army Headquarters has paid tribute on his death and has said that it will stand with the bereaved family. At the same time, it has been said that the family of deceased Agniveer will be given financial assistance as per rules.
The Indian Army wrote on social site “The Indian Army stands firmly with the bereaved family in this hour of grief.”
“To remain silent in the snow, when the bugle sounds they will rise and march again,” wrote the Leh-based headquarters of 14 Corps “All ranks of the Fire and Fury Corps salute the supreme sacrifice of Agniveer (Operator) Gavate Akshay Laxman while on duty at the tough heights of Siachen and express our deepest condolences to the family.”

On behalf of the army, it has been said that Agniveer (conductor) Gavate Akshay Laxman has sacrificed his life in the line of duty. In this hour of grief, the nation stands strongly with the bereaved family.
Let us tell you that the Agneepath model is completely different from the decades-old recruitment system of the army. It has a provision to recruit soldiers for four years, with a provision to retain 25% of them in regular service for 15 more years after fresh screening. Agniveer has been appointed under this provision.
It is noteworthy that since the capture of the glacier by the Indian Army in April 1984, about a thousand soldiers have been killed protecting Siachen, which is almost double the number of people killed in the 1999 Kargil war.
Laxman’s death comes a few days after Agniveer Amritpal Singh died by suicide in Poonch sector. He shot himself while on sentry duty.
Know what help will be given to the family of deceased Agniveer-
1. ₹48 lakh non-contributory insurance.
2. Ex-gratia amount of ₹44 lakh.
3. Contribution of Agniveer (30%) to the Service Fund, with matching contribution by the Government and interest thereon.
4. The next of kin will also receive salary for the remaining tenure till completion of four years from the date of death (above ₹13 lakh); As per the remaining residual tenure.
5. Contribution of ₹8 lakh from Armed Forces War Casualty Fund.
