Balod. The celebration of ‘Chher Chhera Punni’ festival on Paush Paksha Purnima has a different traditional significance in Chhattisgarh. There was a lot of enthusiasm about this festival in Balod district. In the rural and forest areas including the city, the villagers celebrated this festival with great enthusiasm on Monday. On this day, women and children in groups dance from house to house singing traditional songs, in return for which the villagers offer them paddy, rice and kodo.
Doing this on the day of this festival is considered very pious. On Monday, there was a different atmosphere in the forest and rural areas of Balod district, in the streets and houses of the villages, women and children were seen clapping and dancing with sticks in different groups with traditional songs.
Actually, Monday was the festival of ‘Cher Chhera Punni’ and the villagers celebrate this festival every year with great enthusiasm in the traditional way. This festival, which has been going on for years, has a unique ritual of its own. Women and children go from house to house and dance and sing, sometimes with musical instruments and sometimes with sticks in their hands and in return, offer them paddy, rice and kodons. Doing this on this day is considered a very pious act.
According to them, the villagers eagerly wait for this festival which comes once in a year and without any hesitation get absorbed in dancing and singing. However, people still have deep faith in celebrating this traditional festival of Chhattisgarh. Perhaps this is the reason why people stop all their work on this day and start celebrating this festival with pomp and enthusiasm, due to which the existence of this festival continues even today.
