Many veterans are in the field in Mahakaushal field.
Voting is being conducted in Madhya Pradesh today on Friday and with this the future of the candidates who wish to become new members of the 230-member Assembly will be sealed in EVMs. The results of the elections will be revealed on December 3. Mahakaushal area has its own special identity in the politics of the state. Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded many MPs including 3 Union Ministers to retain hold on power in the state. In Mahakaushal area alone, 2 Union Ministers as well as 4 MPs are trying their luck from here.
If seen area wise, a large number of veterans from Mahakaushal area are contesting the elections. There are 38 assembly seats in 8 districts falling in this region. Mahakaushal region includes the famous Chhindwara and Jabalpur districts along with Katni, Narsinghpur, Dindori, Mandla, Seoni and Balaghat districts. In the elections held here 5 years ago in 2018, Congress had won 24 seats in this area. Because of this brilliant performance, Congress was able to return to power after 15 years.

4 MPs including 2 Union Ministers are in the fray
Mahakaushal area is a high profile area in this sense because four MPs including two Union Ministers are contesting elections from here. While a former MP is also trying his luck. Apart from these, along with former Speaker, former Deputy Speaker, a Cabinet Minister and a Minister of State, 5 former Cabinet Ministers are also presenting their challenge.
With Union Minister Prahlad Patel contesting the elections, Narsinghpur assembly seat has become a very high profile seat. Another Union Minister Faggan Singh Kulaste is also contesting from Niwas Assembly seat (Mandla district). Similarly, MP Rao Uday Pratap Singh is also contesting on BJP ticket from Gadarwada seat (Narsinghpur district). BJP has made MP Rakesh Singh its candidate from Jabalpur West. Former MP Bodh Singh is contesting from Katangi seat on Congress ticket.
Congress got 24 seats in 2018
On these 38 seats, BJP has fielded Cabinet Minister Gaurishankar Bisen from Balaghat seat while Minister of State Ram Kishore Kanware is presenting his challenge from Parswada seat. While Congress leader and former Chief Minister Kamal Nath is contesting from Chhindwara seat in Chhindwara district, former speaker NP Prajapati is contesting from Gotegaon seat. Apart from these, former Deputy Speaker and Congress leader Hina Kanware is contesting from Lanji seat.

In the high profile Mahakaushal area, in the 2018 elections, Congress had got 24 seats while BJP was limited to just 13 seats. While in 2013, BJP had captured 24 seats, Congress had won only 13 seats. Independent candidates had won one seat each. Whereas in the 2008 elections, BJP won 22 seats and Congress won 16 seats. The special thing is that after the 2008 and 2013 assembly elections, BJP had formed the government. Now it has to be seen whether BJP’s big move is going to be successful this time in Mahakaushal area or whether Congress will be successful in maintaining its dominance.
