Wheat procurement had come down last year due to fall in domestic production and higher exports. According to the second estimate of the Ministry of Agriculture, the production of wheat in the crop year 2023-24 (July-June) is estimated to be a record 112.2 million tonnes.

The central government has set a target of 341.5 lakh tonnes of wheat procurement for the marketing year 2023-24 starting from April. Last year this figure was 187.9 lakh tonnes. This target has been fixed in the meeting of food secretaries of the states to discuss the procurement arrangements.

Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra presided over the meeting. The meeting was organized here on the sidelines of the State Food Ministers' Conference. The Food Ministry said in a statement that in the total wheat procurement target for the marketing year 2022-23 (April-March), Punjab will target 25 lakh tonnes, Haryana 15 lakh tonnes and Madhya Pradesh 20 lakh tonnes.
