Bairam Khan’s name was recorded with great respect in Mughal history. There were many reasons for this. His connection was with two generations of Mughals – Humayun and Akbar. Bairam played an important role in saving Mughalia Sultanate in India. After the death of Humayun, Bairam’s name was recorded in history for the coronation of Akbar and for capturing Delhi back. Bairam was the most trusted of Humayun, but this trust did not increase just like that. There is also a family legacy behind this.
Bairam Khan was related to Turkic tribal. His father and grandfather were associated with Babur’s empire. Taking forward that legacy, after father Saif Ali Beg, Bairam Khan also joined Babur’s court.
This is how friendship with Humayun happened
Bairam had a special attachment to literature and music. Due to interesting information related to literature and music, he soon became close to Humayun. After Babur’s death, the friendship became deeper. When Humayun conquered the fort in Champaner, Gujarat, Bairam Khan was present with him. Not only this, Bairam did not leave Humayun’s side even while fighting with Sher Shah Suri in Chausa. He stood equally even in the battle of Kannauj. These incidents strengthened the friendship between Humayun and Bairam.
After Humayun’s death in 1556, the Mughal Empire was under threat. After the death of Humayun, many people of the Mughal Empire started plotting against Bairam. This was the time when Bairam was facing the most challenges. In the same period, Sikandar Shah Suri of the Suri dynasty had his eye on the Mughal Empire and also had the responsibility of protecting Prince Akbar. At that time Akbar was in the camp of Kalanaur in Gurdaspur district and was 13 years old.
Akbar’s coronation took place in a hurry
Akbar’s coronation was announced in a hurry on 14 February 1556. Abul Fazl, historian and one of Akbar’s Navratnas, wrote in ‘Akbarnama’, after the death of Humayun, the platform on which Akbar was crowned by Bairam Khan was named Takht-e-Akbar. In that period, Bairam had got the status of Vakil-us-Sultanate, he was included in the highest rank of the Mughal Sultanate. After declaring Akbar as the emperor, Bairam Khan took over the reins of the Mughal army.
Murder part…
Author T.C.A. According to the book Attendant Lords, on the last evening of January in the year 1561Bairam Khan was murdered in Gujarat. The murderer was Mubarak Khan Lohani, whose father was killed by the Mughals in the Battle of Machhiwada in 1555. It is written in Akbar’s biography ‘Akbarnama’ that Lohani hugged Bairam Khan to respect him. During this, he attacked with a dagger in such a way that the dagger crossed the chest. Bairam’s dead body was found by the local people. This has been mentioned in the signboard of the Archaeological Survey of India near the Sahasralinga pond in Patan, Gujarat.
