The country is soon going to get a new Parliament House. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to inaugurate the new building of Parliament House on 28 May. The new triangular shaped Parliament House has been built at a cost of 971 crores. The existing Lok Sabha has a seating capacity of 550 MPs while 888 seats have been made in the new building’s Lok Sabha. In the new Parliament House, the seating places have also been increased for Rajya Sabha MPs. At present, the Rajya Sabha has 250 seats for MPs, while the new Rajya Sabha will have a seating capacity of 384 MPs.
When was the Parliament House built?
On one side the freedom movement had started in the country. But on the other hand, the British government was building the House of Parliament in Delhi. The British started building it for the operation of the administrative structure with the intention of making the capital in Delhi. The Duke of Connaught laid the foundation of this building on February 12, 1921.
It is situated in the heart of Delhi. Parliament House is located near India Gate and about 750 meters from Rashtrapati Bhavan. When the country became independent, the Constituent Assembly took it under its authority. After the constitution came into force in 1950, it was given the form of the Indian Parliament.
How much did it cost and who did the design?
144 pillars have been made outside the Parliament House. It is spread over about an acre. It took about 6 years to build the entire building and the cost of its construction was 83 lakhs. But the design of the building was prepared about 10 years before the foundation was laid.
It was designed by famous British architects Edwin K Lutyens and Herbert Baker. But the circular shape of the building was inspired by the Chausath Yogini Temple located in Morena, MP. That is, even though the architects were from Britain, they followed the Indian tradition with the help of Indian labourers.
When and by whom was it inaugurated?
This building is a sample of the world’s excellent architecture. It has 12 doors. The House of Parliament i.e. Parliament House was completed in 1921. At that time the Viceroy of India was Lord Irwin. His rule used to run. That’s why Lord Irwin inaugurated this building on 18 January 1927. Its name was given to the House of Parliament because the British Legislative Council works under it.
What is special in Parliament House?
Due to lack of space, many things were added later in the Parliament House. In the year 1956, two new floors were added to this building. The central hall of the building is quite famous and attractive. It is circular. The gardens and fountains are the special attractions here. A museum was also built and in the year 2002 a library was also built. There are about 15 books in the library built on about 10 acres.
