How was Dal Lake formed?
Many theories are said to answer this question. One theory says that it is a glacier which has turned into a lake over time. The second theory says that the Dal Lake may have been formed due to a terrible and wild flood in the Khabi Jhelum river. However, no concrete answer has been found to this question yet.
How big is Dal Lake?
Dal Lake is spread over an area of about 18 square kilometers. Its width is about 3.5 kilometers and the maximum depth is 20 feet. Dal Lake has four basins, Bod Dal, Nagin, Gagribal and Lokut Dal. Gardens and beautiful parks built during the Mughal period enhance the beauty of this lake.
Why was the lake named Dal?
The word Dal Lake represents the regional linguistic and culture. The word ‘Dal’ in Kashmiri language itself means lake. Later the word ‘Lake’ was added to the flow of common parlance with ‘Dal’, then it became ‘Dal Lake’.
Dal Lake is also known as the jewel in the crown of Kashmir or the jewel of Srinagar. In the month of July-August, the beauty of the gardens here is made on sight.
Why is Dal Lake famous?
This lake is an important destination for tourism and entertainment. It is an important source of fish farming and water harvesting. Apart from tourism, fishing is the second biggest business here. This sustains the livelihood of the local people.
What is the biggest attraction of Dal Lake?
If you go to Dal Lake, then stay on the houseboat and enjoy the Shikara ride. From the point of view of tourism, other important places of Dal Lake are Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh. A sweet water spring and park are among the places of interest here.
Apart from the Hazratbal pilgrimage here, there is another popular religious tourist destination on the Dal Lake – Shankaracharya Temple, whose structure is ancient.
