According to a report, 13 famous Upanishads were composed from the middle of the 5th century to the second century. These Upanishads include Brihadaranyaka, Kaushitaki, Kena, Chandogya, Taittiriya, Aitareya, Katha, Mundaka, Prashna, Mandukya, Isa, Shvetashvatara and Maitri. Apart from these, other Upanishads were also written.

    But 10 Upanishads have been considered major. These include Isha, Kena, Katha, Prashna, Mandukya, Taittiriya, Aitareya, Chhandogya and Brihadaranyaka. These Upanishads have special importance. The Upanishads explain the diversity and principle of the universe.

    In 1937, WB Yeats published an English translation of the Indian Upanishads, co-authored with Shri Purohit Swami. The translation and collaboration between the two authors occurred throughout the 1930s and it was one of the final works of Yeats.

    How did Yeats become interested in the Upanishads?

    William Butler Yeats has been such a poet and writer of English literature who joined the giants who laid the foundation of Modern English Literature. Yeats’s interest in the Upanishads dates back several decades. As a young man Yeats met Mohini Chatterjee. Mohini Chatterjee was a prominent figure in the rising Theosophical circles of Bengal when she visited Dublin in 1885, or. After this meeting, Yeats wrote 3 poems which were related to India. These included ‘The Indian to His Love’, ‘The Indian Upon God’, and ‘Anasuya and Vijaya’.

    According to the Indian Express report, it is believed that Yeats’s connection with India deepened after meeting Rabindranath Tagore. He met her for the first time in 1912. Due to the poems of Rabindranath Tagore, the friendship between the two deepened. It was from here that he got the inspiration to write Indian civilization and book.

    Before traveling to Europe in 1930, he met the scholar Purohit Swami, to whom Yeats proposed the idea of ​​translating the Upanishads. The condition was that it should be translated not for scholar polyglots but for common people. This is how it got the shape of the book and the ten major Upanishads were first published in April 1937 by Faber and Faber of London. In this way the information of Upanishads written in Sanskrit was translated into English.
