In fact, people believe that he was medically murdered under a conspiracy. It was also sad that the curtain could not be lifted from this mystery. Proper investigation could not be done to know the real reason. He was in a lot of trouble in the last days. It can be said that he was forced to die.
Former Rajya Sabha member Tarun Vijay says that when Mukherjee was arrested in Lakhanpur, he was taken to Srinagar after traveling in an open jeep for 12 hours. The police and the state government of that time knew that he had heart disease, was not keeping well, yet traveling in an open jeep in Kashmir was no less than a torture. They had entered Jammu and Kashmir without a permit.
This was the basis of the arrest. He was an elected MP. Held many respected positions. Nevertheless, after his arrest, he was kept in a house where there was nothing in the name of facilities. When his health deteriorated, it was necessary to take him to the hospital. If there were no arrangements for proper treatment in Kashmir, then he should have been taken to Delhi. But, nothing like this was done.
those 7 painful days
Tarun Vijay says that his last seven days were spent in a lot of trouble due to lack of proper treatment. The mind shuddered at the thought. Quoting his conversation with the famous Dogri poetess Padma Sachdeva, he says that he was given an injection at the last moment and after that he did not wake up but fell asleep forever.
He left Delhi by train on May 8, 1953 and was arrested in Lakhanpur on May 11. From there he was sent to Srinagar’s Central Jail but suddenly he was again shifted to a house (Nishat Bagh) where even basic facilities were not available. Sheikh Abdullah was the CM at that time. At the time of his arrest, he did not remain healthy even for a day after traveling in Kashmir in an open jeep. His health continued to decline. He also had constant high fever and back pain.
His health worsened on the night of 19 June. It was found that he had fluoritis. Even before this, he had suffered this pain twice. With faltering words, he even told this to the available doctor. He also informed that he should not inject streptomycin as his family doctor had forbidden to do so, but the present doctor ordered nurse Raj Dulari to inject. They did not get relief. The doctor also left.
First kept on suffering and then had a heart attack
They kept on suffering and on 22 June, Mukherjee had trouble breathing. Amidst unbearable pain, he was taken to the hospital, where it was found that he had suffered a heart attack. On June 23, 1953, at 3.40 am, he breathed his last in the hospital itself. The state government made a formal announcement of his death.
It is easy to imagine how painful the last seven days of Syama Prasad Mukherjee must have been. Away from home and family, away from loved ones, away from workers and supporters, what would be their condition in a deserted cottage? How hard they must have cut every moment. No government considered it appropriate to conduct an inquiry into the death of a tall leader at that time, when only the duty nurse and doctor would have been questioned, the death would have been unearthed.
death under suspicion
This death is also under suspicion because after independence, Syama Prasad Mukherjee was the first such strong leader who demanded one country-one constitution. For this, he raised his voice in the Parliament as well. He was also against the permit system in Kashmir, although after his death, Pandit Nehru’s government announced the abolition of the permit system.
Needless to say that in the year 2019, the central government implemented the one country-one constitution system in Kashmir as well. Before the abolition of Article 370, two flags were used in Kashmir. The residents of the state were getting special facilities. Now the concept of one nation-one constitution is applicable from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. Surely his soul must have been relieved by the decision of the Centre. Because he went to Kashmir for this demand and never returned later.
