The journey started from a cottage on the river bank in Ahmedabad
Asaram started preparing the spiritual empire in 1972. For this, Motera town, 10 kilometers away from Ahmedabad, was chosen. Prepared his cottage on the banks of Sabarmati river. From rape to fraud… 7 big cases registered so far
- Motera Ashram Case: On July 5, 2008, the half-burnt bodies of 10-year-old Abhishek Vaghela and 11-year-old Dipesh Vaghela were found in the dry bed of the Sabarmati river outside Motera Ashram. The parents of these cousins from Ahmedabad had enrolled them in Asaram’s ‘Gurukul’ school just a few days before their death. An investigation into the matter began, and in 2012, the state police charged seven employees of the Motera ashram with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
- Jodhpur Case:In August 2013, a rape case was registered against Asaram. The family of the victim, a resident of Jodhpur’s Shahjahanpur, was a staunch devotee of Asaram. The victim’s father got Asaram’s ashram built in Shahjahanpur at his own expense. Sent his two children to Asaram’s Gurukul in Chhindwara to study. On August 7, 2013, the news of the 16-year-old daughter being ill was received over the phone. When he reached there, he was told that the daughter is possessed by evil spirits, which only Asaram can cure. Asaram raped her on the pretext of curing her.
- 22 years old rape case: The matter on which the sentence was pronounced on 31 January i.e. Monday is related to the court of Surat. In 2013, two sisters in Surat filed a rape complaint against Asaram and his son. Alleged that between 1997 and 2006, Asaram and his son raped in Motera Ashram. The younger sister had filed a complaint against Narayan Sai and the elder against Asaram. In this case, a case of murder of witnesses was also registered against Asaram and his son.
- Murder of witnesses: In the Jodhpur case, on May 23, 2014, witness Amrit Prajapati was shot dead. Many witnesses were attacked. Many people were threatened. On February 13, 2015, there was a murderous attack on witness Rahul Sachan outside the Jodhpur court. In the midst of such developments, Asaram’s bail plea was rejected several times. Such cases were also registered.
- Land grab case: In 2001, Asaram’s Yoga Vedanta Samiti took a piece of land near Mangalaya temple for 11 days, but did not vacate it later. Asaram, son Narayan Sai and some others were made accused in this case of land worth Rs 700 crores of ‘Jayant Vitamins Limited’. More such cases came to light in many states.
- Case of hostage taking of devotee: In 2013, a woman from Surat filed a case of rape and hostage-taking against Asaram Bapu and seven others. One of the accused died during the trial. The police had filed a charge sheet in this case in July 2014.
- Indecent behavior with devotees: In Rajasthan’s Pali district, December 2012, after the end of the Asaram Katha, she mounted a trolley and showered chocolates as prasad from an electronic machine. During this many people got hurt. Hariram of Sojat village got chocolate in his eyes and had to go to the hospital. He filed a case of negligence against Asaram. The second case came in Vidisha of Madhya Pradesh. During a program in February 2013, the devotee bent down to touch Asaram’s feet when Asaram kicked him. On the complaint of that devotee, the court issued a warrant against Asaram.
In jail for 10 years, 11 bail applications rejected
Asaram is imprisoned in the bars of Jodhpur jail. After being sentenced to life imprisonment by the trial court, more than 11 applications have been rejected from the court in an attempt to get bail several times. Asaram Bapu and son Narayan are facing several cases of rape, unnatural offences, criminal force on women, wrongful confinement and criminal intimidation. Asaram was arrested in 2013 in this case. Sentenced to life imprisonment on 25 April 2018.
In the Motera case, Special Public Prosecutor RC Kodekar says, Asaram has been booked under IPC sections 376 2(C) (rape), 377 (unnatural sex offence), 342 (unlawful confinement), 354 (assault on woman with intent to outrage her modesty) Criminal assault), 357 (assault) and 506 (criminal intimidation).
