Andhra High Court Chief Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra is also named in the collegium. If the central government approves the collegium, then KV Vishwanathan will also join the queue to become the Chief Justice. The names of Justice KV Vishwanathan and Justice PK Mishra have been recommended in the Supreme Court on the basis of vacancies created by the retirement of Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and MR Shah.
Who is KV Viswanathan?
KV Vishwanathan is an advocate of Supreme Court, he is practicing since last 32 years. In 2009, he was given the post of senior advocate by the Supreme Court. KV Vishwanathan is still considered an expert in constitutional law, criminal law, commercial law, securities law and other matters. He has also been the Additional Solicitor General of the country in 2013. In many cases, the Supreme Court has also taken his advice. Vishwanathan is also a member of the Supreme Court Editorial Board, which reports on important Supreme Court cases.

KV Vishwanathan can be the 58th judge of the Supreme Court
KV Vishwanathan was born on 26 May 1966. If the government approves his name, he will be posted in the Supreme Court till May 25, 2031. If we look at the seniority order, he will be among the seven judges standing in line to become the Chief Justice of India. If CJIs continue to be made on the basis of seniority, then KV Vishwanathan may get this opportunity in August 2030. However, his tenure will be only for 9 months.
There was discussion last year as well
The name of senior Supreme Court advocate KV Vishwanathan came up for discussion last year as well in the collegium headed by the then CJI UU Lalit. Later, his name could not be approved due to approval of the proposal through circulation instead of open discussion. At that time, Justice Chandrachud and SK Nazir had also raised objections to this process. Now the collegium of CJI Chandrachud Justice Joseph, Ajay Rastogi, Justice Kaul and Sanjeev Khanna has again recommended his name.
Why the appointment of KV Vishwanathan will be special
If the government approves the name of KV Vishwanathan proposed in the Supreme Court collegium, he will be the 10th person to become a Supreme Court judge after leaving the bar. So far in the history of the Supreme Court, there have been 266 judges, including the present 32 judges. From the point of view of statistics, out of these judges, only 9 judges are such who were made judges of the Supreme Court directly from the bar. SM Sikri was the first name in this list.
