A day before this, on June 6, Pistorius met Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. Let us tell you why India wants to buy submarine from Germany. It is a big challenge before India to reduce the increasing influence of China in the Indian Ocean region.
Why did India choose Germany’s submarine?
India has been engaged in the efforts of acquiring submarines for its navy for a long time. At present, the Indian Navy has 16 submarines. But it is a matter of concern that 11 of these are very old. Two of the submarines that India has are nuclear powered. According to the deal made between India and Germany for the construction of submarines, 6 modern diesel attack submarines will be built.
For this, Germany’s marine weapons company will give its technology to India. All these 6 submarines (Air Independent Propulsion) will be equipped with AIP technology. Submarines made with this technology are safer than conventional diesel-electric submarines. Because it can stay inside the sea for a long time.

Such submarines can stay under water for more than 15 days. On the other hand, conventional submarines have to come to the surface of the water in 2 to 3 days to run their generators. The specialty of the modern diesel attack submarine is its better sensors and weapons.
China is increasing power in the South Sea
India needs 6 submarines to reduce China’s power in the Indian Ocean. Of the 16 submarines that India has, only 6 are those that have been built in recent years. At the same time, many of the 30-year-old submarines have also been retired. India had earlier bought four Shishumar class submarines from Germany from 1986 to 1994. Submarines with German technology have lived up to India’s trust in the past as well, that’s why India wants to make an agreement with Germany for new submarines.
India depends on Russia for weapons
It is a matter of concern for the western countries that India is dependent on Russia to a great extent for weapons. They want to reduce it. It can be understood that in February this year, the German government relaxed the Arms Export Policy for India so that arms purchase agreements could be signed between the two countries.
