The new mountain is twice as tall as the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa.
After finding new islands in Japan, now a new huge mountain has been discovered in the Pacific Ocean. For the first time scientists have got this information. They say that it is twice as tall as the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa. This is a record in itself. Some time ago, the Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) started an expedition, under which a new mountain was discovered at a distance of about 135 kilometers from the Economic Zone for Guatemala.
America’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has described it as a seamount. Seamount is a mountain which is cone shaped. Which are formed through volcanoes. There are many such structures in the ocean, but their exact number has not been known yet.
The seamount is so huge
According to the research report, the height of this mountain is 1.5 kilometers and it is spread over 8 square kilometers. The interesting thing is that despite being such a grand mountain, it was still away from the eyes of scientists. This mountain, which is twice the height of Burj Khalifa, is built at a depth of 7,900 feet. It is about 13,100 feet below sea level.
However, scientists believe that there are more than 1 lakh such seamounts in the ocean, which are at least 1 thousand meters high, but till now only a few seamounts have been discovered. There are many such structures in the ocean. Many new information is yet to come about them.
How will new mountains be found?
After finding a new mountain in the Pacific Ocean, discussion has started that more new mountains should be discovered here. Experts believe that many new information can emerge from here. Now let us understand how such mountains are discovered.
To detect these, scientists have used EM 124 multibeam echo sounder on the ship Falkor which helps in research. This is a special kind of equipment which does high resolution mapping of the ocean. With this help new mountains could be discovered.
Where was the mountain hidden till now?
The answer to the question why this mountain could not be discovered till now has been given by Jyotika Virmani, Executive Director of the Schmidt Ocean Institute. They say that the mountain that was discovered was hidden beneath the waves. This achievement has proved how much still remains to be discovered.
Our oceans are a storehouse of biodiversity. Such mountains are hotspots of diversity where marine organisms, including sponges and corals, live. New research proves that information about how many more such mountains is yet to be revealed. Many new information related to this is expected to emerge in the future.
