Former minister of Uttar Pradesh and Bahubali leader of Purvanchal Harishankar Tiwari passed away. He was 86 years old. Harishankar Tiwari was a well-known leader of UP and once upon a time his name was spoken in Purvanchal. He contested the election while in jail. It is believed that Harishankar Tiwari was the first leader in India to win an election while in jail.
Harishankar Tiwari had moved from crime to politics. Harishankar Tiwari was such a leader of the state who had relations with many parties. He dominated the Chillupar assembly seat for more than two decades. From 1985 to 2007, he kept coming after getting elected as MLA from this seat.
In the discussion during the JP movement
Before the Emergency, when the student movement and JP movement was gaining momentum in the country, the fire of that movement had reached Gorakhpur University as well. At that time Harishankar Tiwari’s supremacy was established in the university. He had his own separate group. He was called the messiah of Brahmin students and when Balwant Singh was the leader of the group of Thakurs. The terror of both the groups had been established in Purvanchal. No one could raise voice against them. Violent clashes also took place between the two groups several times.
Harishankar Tiwari went to jail in 1985
By the eighties, Harishankar Tiwari had become infamous as a big Bahubali leader. He contested the first election while in jail. This was the era of 1985. He contested as an independent from Chillupar assembly seat. He defeated Markandeya of the Congress party with a huge margin. With this, Harishankar Tiwari became the first MLA of the country who won the election while in jail.

Stayed with all the parties of UP
Although Harishankar Tiwari had defeated the candidate of Congress party for the first time, but later that Harishankar Tiwari joined the Congress party. But after the Congress party, he also had relations with the Bharatiya Janata Party, Samajwadi Party.
Harishankar Tiwari was the Science and Technology Minister in 1996 during the Kalyan Singh government. And in the year 2000, he became the Stamp Registration Minister. After this, in the year 2001 and 2002 also, Harishankar Tiwari was involved in the governments ranging from Rajnath Singh to Mayawati. Despite being in Mayawati’s government, his relation with SP remained intact. This was the reason that in the year 2003, he got the post of minister in the SP government as well.
Politics handed over to sons after 2007
After this year, the politics of Harishankar Tiwari started to decline. He lost two consecutive elections. Both the times Rajesh Tripathi defeated him in the election. After this, he decided not to contest elections and handed over his political legacy to his two sons, Kushal Tiwari and Vinay Shankar Tiwari.
