Now World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued a report that after 1970, worldwide Extreme weather 20 lakh people have lost their lives. During the last 50 years, 11,778 natural calamities have occurred.
The report of the World Meteorological Organization states that 90 percent of the total deaths and disasters have occurred in developed countries only. Floods, hurricanes and wildfires in developed countries have caused $4.3 trillion in damage since 1970.
How much loss due to disaster in America?
It has been said in the report that America alone has suffered a loss of $ 1.7 trillion between the years 1070 and 2021. This has been analyzed in detail in the World Meteorological Organisation’s report Atlas of Mortality and Economic Loss from Weather, Climate and Water Extremes.
Who was hit the most by the disaster?
Professor Peteri Talas, Secretary General of WMO, says that the worst hit of the disaster falls on the most vulnerable sections. People with no means unfortunately often bear the brunt of the hazards related to weather, climate and water.
According to him, the recent extremely severe cyclonic storm Mocha is an example of this. This storm caused great devastation in Myanmar and Bangladesh, affecting the poorest of the poor. Thousands of people have died several times in both Myanmar and Bangladesh in the past.
Same reason for all deaths in Asia
It has also been told in this report that out of all the deaths occurring in Asia, 47 deaths occur due to tropical cyclones. This number is around 1 million. There were 281 disasters in Bangladesh, where 520,758 people died, the highest number of deaths in any country in Asia.
How many died in the disaster in Europe?
According to the report, 166,492 people died in 1,784 disasters in Europe, which is 8 percent of the deaths worldwide. Extreme temperature was the main cause of deaths here. After the temperature, more people died due to floods.
Meeting on Disaster Alert System
WMO has ensured that by 2027, early warning systems are developed everywhere on Earth, this can reduce the damage caused by the disaster. The organization has put forward this intention before the World Meteorological Congress.
In fact, representatives of United Nations agencies, development banks, governments, national meteorological and hydrological services have to unite and contemplate in Geneva, Switzerland regarding the early warning system.
Less impact of disaster on developing countries
According to the report of the World Meteorological Organisation, less developed countries and small islands have less such disasters, but even a small disaster that comes here causes great damage. There is a bad effect on the economies of these countries.
