There is no cure for tetanus
You must have heard about the disease tetanus. Whenever there is an injury due to iron, you must have gone to the doctor and got an injection for tetanus, but do you know that there is no cure for tetanus. The injection you get is not a medicine for tetanus but a vaccine, which is not a cure for this disease, but rather prevents it. That is, this vaccine cannot save you after getting tetanus, it is given only so that tetanus can be prevented in future.
According to the World Health Organization, once someone is infected with tetanus, it becomes difficult to save the patient’s life. Tetanus infection attacks the nervous system of a person. This infection also attacks the muscles of the body and can also cause kidney or heart failure. This is the reason why a tetanus patient has a higher risk of death.
There is no treatment for 2500 years
2500 years ago, a Greek doctor, Hippocrates, identified the disease tetanus. Since then there is no cure for it. Vaccine for tetanus was made in 1924. After the vaccine was made, protection against it started, but due to lack of information, many people did not get the tetanus vaccine in childhood. Because of this, even today people die from this disease.
cover the wound as soon as the injury occurs
When there is no cure for tetanus then how can it be prevented? In this regard, Dr. L., HOD of the Department of Medicine at Lady Hardinge Medical College. H Ghotekar says that if a person gets any wound then give first aid to him immediately. This is because the bacteria causing tetanus enters the body through open wounds and causes this disease. Therefore do not leave the wound open.
There is a risk of tetanus if you get injured by rusty iron, any plastic item that has been lying around for many months, or dirty wood. Such things may contain tetanus bacteria which enters the body when there is an injury. Although it is not necessary that these bacteria be present in every such item, still prevention is necessary as a precaution. Therefore, if there is any wound, keep it covered.
How does bacteria attack?
Dr. Ghotekar explains that the tetanus bacteria enters the body from a wound and leaves a kind of poison in the blood. This poison attacks any part of the body including muscles and nervous system. Due to this, pain starts in the bones and stiffness occurs in the body. If the first attack of bacteria occurs on the nervous system, it can cause sudden paralysis and the body stops functioning, due to which the person can die. Only one in 10 people who becomes victim of tetanus survives. That too if the symptoms are mild.
what is protection
Dr. Ajit Kumar at Rajiv Gandhi Hospital, Delhi tells that to prevent tetanus, get the vaccine. It is not necessary to get vaccinated only if there is an injury. You can get its vaccine anytime. If you remain vaccinated, there will be no risk of tetanus even if you get injured. You will not need to get the vaccine again in case of injury.
Once the tetanus vaccine is administered, there is no risk of infection for at least five years. After five years you can take a booster dose of tetanus again. Its vaccine is administered free of cost in hospitals and is easily available at medical stores also.
