New Delhi: Children were the least affected in the first two waves of the corona epidemic, but in the third wave they are becoming increasingly infected. Experts said that more data is needed from India to ascertain whether the rate of infection has increased in India.
In a seminar organized by AIIMS on Management of Children with COVID-19, Dr Rakesh Lodha, Head, Professor, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, AIIMS, Delhi said that there are many possible reasons for children being repeatedly affected by the more infectious Omicron. is the first. Apart from this, easing of security measures, complete unlocking, mass gathering, distance and non-adherence to masks etc. have also contributed.
There has been no dramatic increase in the number of children getting infected, Lodha said, adding that the absolute number has increased in proportion to the increase in the number of cases. Children were protected to some extent from covid till now, as fewer children have co-morbidities. Also children respond better to the virus. However, Omicron has become measles-like with an R-value of around 10 (global).
He said, “Omicron is clearly more infectious and against the R value, which gives an idea about how contagious it is, how easily it can spread. Various groups have speculated that it may be delta and Much more than the original virus. It is thought to be more than seven, with some groups estimated to be closer to 10 or higher than 10. In that scenario, it comes close to measles which is a highly contagious disease, What we see as children.”
Dr Randeep, Director, AIIMS, New Delhi said, “There is also a lot of concern about the severity of the disease in children in this current wave, with some reports from hospitals in the US claiming that they are seeing an increase in the number of children. “
