Kolkata: The pace of corona in the country is becoming uncontrollable in many cities. Something similar is being seen in Kolkata city of West Bengal as well. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) said that the overall weekly positivity rate of COVID-19 in Kolkata has reached 60.29 percent, which is second in the country.
According to the data of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), the same rate was recorded in Howrah district of West Bengal at 50.89 percent for the week ended January 11, which is very high. Kolkata recorded 7,060 cases on Wednesday, 495 more than the previous day, the state health department said in a bulletin.
On the other hand, Howrah district reported 1361 fresh COVID-19 cases on Wednesday. On Tuesday, this figure was 1815. West Bengal recorded 22,155 fresh COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, 1,057 more than the previous day’s count, said a state health department bulletin.
In the last 24 hours, there were 23 deaths due to corona virus, taking the death toll to 19,959. Eight deaths were recorded in North 24 Parganas district, while seven deaths were reported in Kolkata. Two deaths each were recorded in Howrah and Uttar Dinajpur. The bulletin detailed that one death each was reported from West Bardhaman, East Bardhaman, South 24 Parganas and Darjeeling districts.
Since Tuesday, 8,117 patients have recovered from the disease, while the discharge rate is now 92.51 percent. So far 16,81,375 people have been cured of this disease in West Bengal. The number of active cases is 1,16,251.
At least 71,792 samples were tested in West Bengal in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of such diagnostic tests to 2,20,62,882.
Meanwhile, Bengali superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee and actress Swastika Mukherjee tested positive, following which they have gone into home quarantine.
At least 4,78,026 doses of COVID vaccine were given in the state on Wednesday, a health department official said. “A total of 86,118 doses of the vaccine were given to the 15-18 years age group, while 38,215 booster doses were given during the day to those eligible for it,” he said.
