Moscow: The WHO said on Sunday that the way the coronavirus pandemic is developing shows that the virus will never be completely eradicated.
The news agency Tas quoted WHO representative Melita Vujnovi on the Soloviev Live YouTube channel as saying that the virus will continue to be transmitted in the population as an endemic disease.
He said that the corona virus is on the way to become an endemic disease. That means it won’t end. But we have to learn how to treat it and protect ourselves from it.
He said that the most important thing is that we need to stop the infection right now and reduce the number of people falling prey to it. If this is not done, then the variants in a new form will appear unexpectedly.
Vujnovic said the evidence shows the Omicron variant is less serious than others, but its dangers should not be underestimated and it is too early for humanity to take any precautions.
There is now evidence that Omicron seems to be less lethal than (previous variants), but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be taken seriously, he said. Coronavirus infection can have very serious consequences.
Ms Vujnovic said that in addition to vaccination, it is now extremely important to follow other safety measures including wearing a face mask and changing it at regular intervals, ventilating rooms and avoiding crowds in confined spaces.
Meanwhile, Russia on Sunday reported 27,179 new cases of coronavirus infection in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 10,774,304.
After the death of 723 people due to this infection in Russia, the death toll has increased to 320,634.
