Berlin: For the first time since the start of the corona epidemic, the number of recorded corona infections in Germany has exceeded 90,000. This information was given by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for Infectious Diseases. Germany reported a new record number of cases on Friday for the third day in a row, with 92,223 cases, according to the RKI.
The agency said in its weekly report on Thursday, after a temporary drop in the number of coronas at the end of 2021, now the fifth wave of the corona epidemic has started in Germany with the Omicron variant.
For the first time, the share of cases in Germany due to Omicron was recorded at 73 percent in the first week of 2022, reports Xinhua news agency.
RKI said, “The rapid increase in the share of Omicron in the report of corona cases has been going on for the past one week.”
According to the RKI and the German Intensive Care Availability Register (DIVI), non-vaccinated patients in hospitals are admitted to intensive care units (ICUs).
As of Thursday, 72.5 per cent of the country’s population was fully vaccinated with at least 382 crore booster shots, according to official figures. However, 209 million people in Germany have not yet received the corona vaccine.
The federal health minister, Karl Lauterbach, said in Germany on Thursday that he would support compulsory coronavirus vaccination as the safest and quickest way to avoid the pandemic.
